Weekly Quiz

"Debut Splashes"

September 17, 2007

Welcome back to the weekly quiz for the week of September 17, 2007.  We all saw Houston Alexander plow through yet another opponent at UFC 75, and he has burst onto the scene more explosively than anyone since Sokoudjou knocked out both Antonio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona earlier this year in PRIDE (and why exactly didn’t Dana White sign this guy??).

All these impressive debuts bring to mind the wrestling days of old.  You know, when guys would actually come in with a push instead of losing right away like they do in modern day WWE.

The rules of the quiz rules are different this time.  This time, we’re keeping it simple.  There will be no winners, and in fact, you will not even be sending in any answers.  Not only did doing that result in mega spam for us, but it also clogged our inboxes.  Instead, we’ll just ask questions, reveal answers next week, and you can play on your own to brighten up your Monday morning.  It’s not the best system, but it’s simple and keeps us sane.

We’ve also cut down from 10 questions to just 5.  We’ll also throw some MMA into the mix and see how that goes.

1.   One very impressive UFC debut belonged to our current heavyweight hero, Randy Couture.  He destroyed a former WWF and New Japan wrestler, in fact.  In this memorable 1997 debut, what former pro wrestler fell victim to Captain America?

2.   Brock Lesnar recently made his MMA debut, defeating Min Soo Kim in very impressive fashion.  His debut in WWE was also handled well, thanks to the presence of Paul Heyman, who did Lesnar’s promos for him.  However, Heyman wasn’t referred to as Lesnar’s “manager.”  No, that was too “’80s” in Vince’s mind.  Instead of being Lesnar’s manager, Heyman was Lesnar’s what?

3.   John Cena, currently the top wrestling star in the country, made a splash in 2002 when he debuted on SmackDown.  It was a very different Cena, with different ring attire and no traces of his rapper gimmick.  He lost the match, but more than held his own and it was a hot debut.  Whom did he wrestle?

4.   Sid Vicious, the man who looked like a million dollars just standing there, conjures up many images in our minds when his name is mentioned.  Vince McMahon saw huge dollars in him, and in 1991, upon doing a very unprofessional job for El Gigante at SuperBrawl ’91, he signed with the WWF.  Sid debuted for the WWF as a “special enforcer” at what PPV event?

5. 5.  Speaking of El Gigante, I was there live for his WWF debut as Giant Gonzales.  People behind me were freaking out and wondering what the Heck that was walking down the aisle.  I guess they never watched him in WCW.  Gonzales debuted at what WWF PPV event?

Answers will be posted next week.
