Weekly Quiz

"Sudden Departures"

October 15, 2007

Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of October 15, 2007.  The MMA world is reeling from the shock of Randy Couture’s resignation, but for wrestling fans, we know about sudden departures of major superstars all too well.

In fact, 2007 has seen one major WWE star after another disappear for months, whether it was due to injury, suspension, or quitting.  This week’s quiz will take a look at some of these from the past, and we’re calling it, “Sudden Departures.”

Last week's answers:

-HHH's tag team partner against Jericho and Benoit was Steve Austin.

-In 1991, Scott Steiner tore his biceps.

-That sick leg injury in WCW happened to the one and only Sid Vicious.

-Cactus Jack lost his ear in Germany.

-Backstage at Survivor Series '97, Davey Boy Smith re-injured his knee when he tried to quell the backstage fracas between Vince McMahon and Bret Hart (in which Bret gave Vince a black eye).

Here are this week's questions.  Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared.  We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.

1.  “Stone Cold” Steve Austin has left WWE more times than we can count, but always comes back.  In 2002, he left in frustration after being asked to lose to which former WWE superstar?

2.  Not only did this man suddenly leave WWE, but he was the first wrestler to ever appear on Raw and WCW Nitro on the same night.  Millions of casual wrestling fans must have thought they were hallucinating over that one.  That’s what happens when one show is taped and the other is live.  Name this wrestler.

3.  WWE claims to have been blindsided by this wrestler’s departure in 1995, even though it was reported in newsletters a few weeks prior.  Nevertheless, he showed up on the very first episode of WCW Nitro, instantly establishing it as the hot new show on cable, capable of providing major surprises.  Name this wrestler.

4.  Quitting a wrestling promotion isn’t as easy it is for you and I to quit our jobs at work, thanks to those iron-clad contracts (and those nasty non-compete clauses).  Brock Lesnar found that out when he gave notice to pursue a career in the NFL.  Which of the following best describes Brock Lesnar’s football career?

A.  He never made the team (the Vikings), and pursued MMA instead

B.  He made the team, but never played any games

C.  He played some games in pre-season, but never in the regular season

D.  He played a few games in the regular season, and was then cut from the team

5.  Frustration with management is usually the main reason people quit jobs.  A classic case of this was Jim Cornette in 1990, who got fed up with WCW (weren’t we all??), quit, and took Stan Lane with him.  This broke up the Midnight Express, probably the best working tag team of the 1980s, and also 1990, although the Steiners were right up there with them.  If Cornette got so fed up with WCW back then, how is he able to stay sane in TNA with Russo at the helm?  That’s a rhetorical question, not a quiz question.  The quiz question is: when Cornette quit WCW in 1990, who was the man in charge at WCW?  His title was VP of Wrestling Operations, and hardcore wrestling fans at the time desperately wanted him fired (and about a year later, he was).

Answers will be posted next week.
