Weekly Quiz

"Remembering the Rumbles - Part 2"

January 14, 2008

Welcome to the Armpit wrestling quiz for the week of January 14, 2008.  It is now 5 days since I took steroids... sort of.  Yes, my dermatologist shot me up the rear with a small dose of 'roids in order to reduce some red inflammation in my fingertips caused by the cold weather.  Not exactly the steroids as I was hoping for, as I could have used a little extra muscle mass.  The nurse chuckled at my joke, but then said one day I'll be happy I'm so skinny, because after age 40, being big starts to really work against you.  That might be true, but right now, being small sucks.

But enough about my bitter genetic predisposition; there are quizzes to be given.  We now pick up where we left off last week, in full Royal Rumble mode.  Here now is "Remembering the Rumbles - Part 2."

Last week's answers:

-Rumble '88 went head to head with the NWA Bunkhouse Stampede.  It was Crockett's attempt to run the New York market, and it failed.  The show was surprisingly lackluster, and the Rumble ended up being the better show.  Oh well, at least Crockett got his revenge at Clash of the Champions #1 a couple months later.  Now that, my friends, was a real drubbing.  But that's for another day and another quiz.

-At Rumble '89, Rick Rude and the Ultimate Warrior had a posedown, right at a time when steroid use within WWE was at peak levels.  It ended when Rude whacked Warrior over the back of the head with an arm flexor device.

-The 7 participants of Royal Rumble '90 who are no longer with us are Curt Hennig, Bad News Brown, Andre the Giant, Dino Bravo, Earthquake, Rick Rude, and Hercules.

-At Rumble '91, Savage hit Warrior in the head with his King's ceptor, which led to Slaughter getting the win.  I'll never forget the image of some 8-year-old kid jumping up and down like crazy in the front row.  He was the only one popping at that finish.

-On the edition of Superstars of Wrestling after the Rumble '92, the WWF edited out the cheers for Sid and piped in some boo's.  They also edited in some "Hogan" chants.  The WWF was far more careful with manipulating crowd reactions back then, as opposed to, say, ECW One Night Stand '06.  In early 90s WWF, they would've never let a Cena vs. RVD match happen in front of 1,000 die-hard ECW fans who threatened to riot if Cena won.

Here are this week's questions. Remember, the new rules are that you no longer need to submit your questions, and no winners will be declared. We're just doing this for fun and to honor the forgotten world of wrestling history.

1.  I attended Royal Rumble '93 in person, as it was the first major WWF/WCW PPV to be held within driving distance of the California Bay Area.  A large crowd showed up because of that, and large crowds for pro wrestling in America in 1993 were not common.  This show happened right as two major happenings were unfolding.  #1, Raw had just debuted as the hot new show.  #2, Ric Flair was leaving to go back to WCW.  Since Vince could never let Flair hold the record for longest Rumble participant (which he set at Rumble '92), he had someone break the record.  Who broke his record on this night (and spent half the time outside the ring selling injuries)?

2.  Rumble ’94 had the famous finish with Lex Luger and Bret Hart both being declared winners.  The follow-up would be the next night on Raw.  The WWF was hoping for a 4.0 rating for that show, which would’ve been huge at the time, and it didn’t reach that mark.  But the strong crowd reaction for Hart made WWF choose to go with him as the main guy instead of Luger.  As for the Undertaker, he was involved in a preposterous finish where his casket exploded, yet his face appeared on the Titantron vowing revenge.  Poor Jim Cornette, a wrestling traditionalist, had to stand at ringside and play along with this nonsense.  Whom did Undertaker wrestle that night?

3.  Desperate for media attention, the WWF used the hottest sex goddess to accompany the winner of the Rumble, Shawn Michaels.  Unfortunately, she couldn’t help but crack up at Michaels’ dance routine, thus ruining the mystique.  What celebrity was used at Rumble ’95?

4.  At Rumble ’96, Jerry Lawler hid under the ring for over 20 minutes.  Why?

5.  Rumble ’97 drew a huge crowd, thanks to its being held in San Antonio, where headliner Shawn Michaels is from.  Michaels’ hero accompanied him to the ring for his match with Sid Vicious.  Who was this hero?

6.  San Jose, CA was the location of Rumble ’98, where Shawn Michaels had a hot match with the Undertaker in a casket match.  What unfortunate accident happened in that match?

Answers will be posted next week.
